The teaching slideshows below are designed to use birdsong as an alternative way to teach about sound, waves, frequency and amplitude. They are based around the use of sonograms (a graph of frequency against time) and listening to birdsong. As well as the teaching of sound, this also provides a way to support and develop students’ skills in drawing and interpreting graphs.
There are two versions of the teaching pack, one for primary school aged children (8-10 year olds) and one for secondary school aged students (11-14 year olds) although I have adapted these for groups of older students and teachers. The content and approach of the packs is similar but the detail is adjusted accordingly as well as curriculum notes added based on the English curriculum content. Below are the latest versions of the teaching pack for you to edit and use as you wish , also an article from School Science Review about this project.
